Introduction

Modern fleet management demands advanced tools that not only monitor vehicles but also provide data to optimize operations, enhance driver safety, and accurately assess insurance risk. Our client, a leading UK-based provider of automotive services and solutions, faced the challenge of maintaining and evolving their extensive telematics platform, a key component of their B2B offering serving over 10,000 active users. This platform, accessible as a web-based SaaS and mobile application, was already operating on Microsoft Azure with a microservices architecture, but required significant modernization and ongoing development to remain competitive and address existing technical debt. Rite NRG stepped in as a strategic partner to drive this evolution, leveraging the power of IoT and enabling future AI capabilities.

The Challenge:

The main challenge was maintaining and evolving a sophisticated telematics platform already running on Microsoft Azure with a microservices architecture. While a significant step had been taken by the client to move to the cloud, the platform, originally built in 2009, still presented substantial challenges. Crucially, all updates and modernization efforts had to be performed while the system remained live and operational, without negatively impacting the existing users. Key issues included:

  • Unsupported .NET Framework: A critical component of the platform relied on the unsupported .NET Framework 4.5. This created significant maintenance burdens and limited opportunities for leveraging newer technologies and features, importantly exposing the platform to potential security risks due to the lack of ongoing security updates from Microsoft .
  • Accumulated technical debt: Despite the microservices architecture, the system had been developed by multiple vendors and individuals over many years without a unified or consistent SDLC strategy. This resulted in accumulated technical debt, making parts of the system difficult to maintain and extend, and requiring careful refactoring and code improvements .
  • Complete lack of documentation: There was virtually no documentation for the platform. All critical knowledge regarding its early design and functionality resided solely with one key individual, the Product Owner on the client side. This created a significant bottleneck and risk to the project’s progress and knowledge retention .
  • Regaining control over development & predictability: The client’s business teams needed to regain control and predictability over the development process. They required clear timelines and cost estimates for new features, while also needing the flexibility to frequently change requirements and priorities in response to market demands.
  • Continuous development & maintenance: The platform required constant updates and new features to stay competitive in a dynamic market, all while ensuring uninterrupted 24/7 operation for over 10,000 users.
  • Integration of advanced telematics: Expanding the platform’s capabilities to include features like real-time tracking, driver behaviour analysis, and data collection for insurance purposes . The client’s public site highlights the importance of understanding driver behaviour for safety, cost reduction, and training, along with real-time tracking for efficiency and security.
  • Regulatory compliance: Ensuring compliance with strict data protection and retention regulations, particularly for vehicle telemetry data.

Rite NRG's Solution

Rite NRG partnered with the client to take ownership of the platform’s evolution and maintenance. Our #riteway approach focused on:

  • Building a dedicated team: We assembled a hybrid team of experienced specialists from Poland, working closely with the client’s key stakeholders, ensuring smooth onboarding and integration .
  • Implementing agile methodologies for control and flexibility: We introduced a dual-methodology approach – SCRUM for new functionality development (with transparent two-week sprints, regular demos, and feedback sessions) to provide predictability and allow for priority adjustments, and KANBAN for efficient handling of service requests, ensuring flexibility for immediate needs . This empowered the client’s business teams with visibility and control over the development roadmap and team capacity.
  • Core technology modernization: We successfully performed the critical migration of the platform’s components from the unsupported .NET Framework 4.5 to .NET Core 6.0, significantly improving performance, security, and maintainability. We also addressed technical debt within the existing microservices architecture through careful refactoring.
  • Maintaining & extending azure microservices: We took responsibility for the ongoing maintenance and extension of the platform’s microservices architecture on Azure, optimizing the utilization of Azure-native services to enhance scalability and performance .
  • IoT device integration: We ensured seamless integration with various telematics devices (black boxes, RFID cards), enabling real-time data collection and processing . This directly supports the client’s offering of real-time tracking and driver activity monitoring.
  • Developing advanced features: We expanded the platform with key telematics functionalities, including detailed driver behaviour analysis and preparing the ground for future AI-driven solutions (driver scoring, predictive maintenance, fleet optimization) . The client’s site confirms these features are crucial for their value proposition, enabling insights into safety, efficiency, and costs.
  • Improving processes and documentation: We conducted a detailed audit of the platform, identifying areas for optimization and contributing to knowledge transfer and documentation efforts
